History of the Friends of the Library

1990

A group of Real County citizens formed a Friends of the Library (FOL) organization. Articles of Incorporation were granted by the Texas Secretary of State to create the Friends of the Library Association.

1992

The Real County Public Library was established by the Friends of the Library with all assets being owned by the Friends of the Library. The first building opened in September in a rented facility. FOL board and member meetings were held in the County Courthouse.

1993

First Cowboy Breakfast fundraiser held.

1995

The property was purchased where the current building now stands.

1997

Ground was broken for the new building.

1999

The dedication of the new building took place on October 29, with guest speaker Elmer Kelton.

Did you know…

Daily operations, payroll, and special programs are managed by the Library Board. Funding is received from the Friends of the Library.

FOL owns and maintains the assets and conducts fundraising events.

Real County Public Library is a private, non-profit library, receiving approximately ten percent of its budget from Real County.  The remaining ninety percent needed is acquired through fundraising events.  Currently, the FOL conducts three main events/projects each year: 

  • The Annual Appeal Letter
  • The Gala, held the last Saturday of February 
  • The Cowboy Breakfast held the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend.
